Mike Nelson, founder of Five Towers Media and Hourglass SaaS, has witnessed a massive shift in the business landscape, noting that the number of fractional professionals doubled from 60,000 in 2022 to 120,000 in 2024, according to the Frak Conference State of Fractional Industry Report.

Recognizing the immediate need to support this rapidly growing workforce, the veteran fractional operator is launching The Fractional Operator, a new podcast and knowledge-sharing platform designed specifically to break down silos and connect outsourced professionals across the industry.

Breaking Out of the Fractional Bubble

With a 15-year history running Five Towers Media and roughly 12 years of experience providing fractional outsourced marketing, Nelson intimately understands the unique challenges of the trade. Despite the rapid growth of the sector over the last five years, he observed that many outsourced leaders—including COOs, CTOs, CFOs, CMOs, agency owners, and consultants—often work in total isolation. Historically, they lacked a dedicated, non-threatening environment to discuss the day-to-day mechanics of their operations.

“As fractional operators, we’re all kind of in our own little bubble a lot of the time,” Nelson said. The Fractional Operator was created to bridge this exact gap. Rather than acting as a traditional host delivering a one-sided lecture, Nelson intends to bring on other fractional leaders to foster peer-to-peer discussions. “It’s not going to be a monologue, and it’s not going to be the Mike Nelson show,” he noted. By speaking with guests who operate in similar or adjacent roles, listeners gain a clearer picture of the broader landscape.

A Knowledge-Share for Scaling and Efficiency

Every episode of the podcast will focus heavily on actionable operational details rather than vague business theory. Nelson plans to guide conversations around the specific software platforms his guests rely on, the internal processes they have successfully implemented, the unique problems they encounter in the field, and the hard-won lessons they use to overcome those hurdles. This operational focus closely mirrors the mission of Hourglass SaaS, which Nelson describes as the first and only operations platform built for fractional operators by fractional operators.

The show will deliver unwavering support tailored to two distinct mindsets within the fractional community. For growth-minded operators focused on building an agency, the content will provide tools and strategies to help them scale effectively. As Nelson explained, the goal is to “give small business owners the tools to grow their business, scale it, problem-solve, and stay ahead of the market.” Conversely, for those who view their practice as a lifestyle business, the objective is entirely different. The podcast aims to “help them be more efficient and get more done while working less,” Nelson said. “That’s the dream for some of us,” he added.

Nelson is ready to share these insights with the wider professional community. Each new release will be accompanied by a companion newsletter.
